It sometimes doesn’t even feel like we are doing so much good when we’re all having such a good time! With the support of our dedicated bartenders and theirfriends, we raised $30,000 to fund ALS research!

Special thanks to Brett Adams and the entire Burntwood Tavern team for being such great hosts to our traveling circus. And as always, lots of love to our friends in Soulshine for providing live music throughout the evening!

hello Cleveland & happy Friday.

So much to do this weekend from yard work cleanup to the big Cleveland Magazine “Best Of” Party, a trip to the Westside Market an awesome girlie clothing shop with other fellow CLE bloggers, a wedding reception of friends and to wrap it up…GO Brownies! How does your weekend look? Gotta love fall in Ohio, it’s seriously beautiful!

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending opening day of the new Rocky River location of the new Burntwood Tavern (in the old Pub location at Beachcliff Market Square.) I was overly impressed of the space makeover…good bye uncomfortable throne chairs, hello gas fireplace, Good bye British replica art and hello locally resourced barn wood and unique handmade light fixtures.

While the space is stunning the food on the menu is JUST as yummy. From pumpkin ravioli to yummy lunch combos of soup, salad and half sandwiches. This place has something for everyone, plus it is very reasonably priced overall. The bar looks well stocked with plenty of bottles of wine and good unique beers on tap. I think this new space is going to do well, like the Deagan’s of Rocky River.

Their opening meet and greet is this Saturday night, swing by to check it out.

Although Rocky River may have said “Good Day” to The Pub, a new tenant for the restaurant space has been secured and is gearing up for a fall opening date.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to be going to the west side,” said Bret Adams, owner of the Burntwood Tavern in Chagrin Falls. In a recent phone interview, Adams said that the choice of Rocky River for a second location was based partly on the similarity between the city and Chagrin Falls.

“Rocky River is a mirror image of Chagrin Falls and it’s very family oriented,” commented Adams, who said the restaurant, like his first location, which has been open for 10 months, will be based on “simple, warm, coziness.”

Although many residents have expressed their surprise over the demise of The Pub, Beachcliff Market Square property manager Bill Brink of Madison Marquette said that the British-themed bar “wasn’t a concept that fit in this area.

“This is area more restaurant based than bar based,” Brink recently told West Life. While the Pub served up English eats, the focus was on the large bar, which featured a wide variety of beers. “A business decision was made. We tried to work with them and we discussed (the situation) for months and tried to see if something could happen,” he stated.

A statement on The Pub’s website said, “Unfortunately, the Rocky River Pub is not performing at the same level as our other Pubs. It is in the best interest of the company to close this location … We thank Madison Marquette for working with us on viable options to keep The Pub open. Unfortunately, we were unable to negotiate a deal that was mutually beneficial, but we appreciate their time and effort.”

Brink pointed to the success of other neighborhood restaurants in the city such as Sweet Melissa, and The Market, stating that the Burntwood Tavern would be a good fit.

“Locally owned restaurants are a common factor in Rocky River. We’re developing a concentration of some of the best restaurants on the west side,” he stated.

Adams echoed Brink’s assessment, adding that his goal is to make the restaurant “look like it has been here for 100 years.” He said he would accomplish this, much as he did in the Chagrin Falls location, which features hand hewn beams and a copper topped bar. He plans on using wood purchased from an old barn in Pennsylvania. “Lots of barns in Pennsylvania are made of wormy chestnut. This is a gorgeous wood that does not exist around here.”

Adams, a former corporate chef who also worked for the Brio Italian restaurants before opening the Burntwood Tavern, said his menu will “flow with the seasons” and featureavailable fresh produce. He added that signature dishes will include smoked prime rib, turkey, and pork chops, all prepared on the premises. “Everything from the malt vinegar to the pickles will all be made by us,” Adams stated.

A fall opening is planned for the new restaurant to provide what Adams referred to as a “honeymoon” period before the rush of the holidays.

Expressing optimism about the local restaurant scene, Brink said that it is the one business not directly affected by technology.

“Restaurants are becoming the anchors of retail areas. Eating is the one thing people can’t do on the Internet.”
Adams shares the positive outlook. “We’re going to be here at least 20 years,” he stated.

Burntwood Tavern in Chagrin Falls serves skillfully made, hearty food in a cozy setting

<itunes:author>Bret Adams</itunes:author>

By Debbi Snook, The Plain Dealer
(Peggy Turbett/ The Plain Dealer) Burntwood Tavern in Chagrin Falls gallery (8 photos) Santa showed up during our lunchtime visit to Burntwood Tavern in Chagrin Falls.

Whoops, this might not be the right time to judge performance. All that cheering and ho-ho-ho-ing in the rustic front lounge could throw an antler into the staff's timing.

But things cruised along uninterrupted in the main dining areas. A couple of dads even broke loose from the Clausathon to come back early and finish their meals. Either they were very hungry or very naughty.

Santa would understand. This place can satisfy a belly that is like a bowl full of jelly.

That's because Burntwood is a fresh take on the tavern concept, blending profiles old and new. The principals, with experience at Brio, Bravo and Bar Louie -- give a nod to tradition with plenty of hearty fare. The moderate prices are right, with many sandwiches under $10 and many dinners under $19.

But there's something else going on: a fine-tuned understanding of what cooking techniques make a dish more than the sum of its parts.

Check out the Steak and Fries ($22), a New York strip that isn't so much large as it is thickly cut, giving the kitchen a chance to contain the most juices on what can be a touchy, easily overdone cut. Or the Wood-Roasted Half Chicken ($15), everything you'd imagine you'd get from a veritable royal kitchen in merry old England -- woodsy aroma, crisp skin, falling-off-the-bone tender and well-seasoned meat. Bestow knighthood to the creator of that one.

Even the fries are amped up in style, arriving in a paper-bag pouch with a sprinkle of big-crystal salt. They were slightly soggy on our first visit, but rapturously crisp on our second; so were the sweet-potato fries.

The kitchen let the pork chops ($18) sit a few moments too long on the grill. They were astonishingly smoky, slightly sweet and a reasonably tender chew. But the meat was a shade dry, even if improved by peach and jalapeno preserves.

Fish dishes took our meter readings back to swoon levels again. A succulent cedar-planked salmon ($18) came flanked by blistered asparagus spears and plump sugar snap peas, with a mellow tomato vinaigrette on the side. It was refreshing to have two vegetables and no starch on this one, just as it would have been good to have at least a token entree that could be ordered by a vegetarian.

A beer-battered cod sandwich ($9) with jalapeno tartar sauce hit the spot in me that hasn't been hit in a long time, with truly crisp, nongreasy breading and a pouf of flaky snow-white fish inside. Calamari appetizer ($9) followed suit in a crisp preparation. The Angus burger ($10) had both good flavor and that open, hand-patted texture that lets you savor every morsel.

The house makes its own salad dressings. It's worth trying the house salad ($5) of fresh greens, gorgonzola cheese, bacon, red onion and tomato. The smartly simple, lightly peppered wash brought out the voluptuousness of everything. A field-greens salad ($5) was mostly romaine lettuce. Both can be turned into a dinner salad for an extra $4.

For desserts ($5), cream is the word except for a cookie plate, with the rest being cheesecake, a black raspberry ice cream sandwich with cocoa waffles, and a hot apple crostada in a small bowl that melted the rich vanilla ice cream pretty quickly. For some, not a terrible thing.

It's hard to consider the food here without acknowledging the setting. Burntwood is lined with replaned barn wood, giving off an airy but woodsy feeling -- and aroma. It's refreshingly underdecorated, as if the whole point is the food and the companionship you bring to it. That tavern concept is timeless.
